The Michigan National Debate Institute

June 19th – July 9th, 2011
The MNDI curriculum is designed by long-time high school coaches from around the country who have served on our faculty for many years. Because the MNDI admits students of every experience level, the faculty has designed appropriate curriculum to address specific needs of students in their individual classes.

The MNDI has never had a concluding tournament. This format fundamentally alters the orientation of both the students and faculty in a way that encourages preparation for the entire debate season, not just for winning a workshop tournament. This format allows more emphasis to be placed on individual instruction with students on debating technique and topic-specific analysis. The sharing and cooperation encouraged by this format generates a more productive and enjoyable environment for all involved.

2011 Missouri State Debate Institute (MSDI)

2 Week Policy, 1st Session (June 19-July 2) ($600 Commuters, $1200 Dorm)
2 Week Policy, 2nd Session (July 3 – July 16) ($600 Commuters, $1200 Dorm)
3 Week Policy (June 19-July 9) ($800 Commuters, $1700 Dorm)
4 Week Policy (June 19-July 16) ($1000 Commuters, $2200 Dorm)

The MSDI at Missouri State University is an excellent high school debate camp providing in-depth instruction at an incredible value:

MSDI graduates have consistently dominated the local debate circuit, and several other circuits. Many have qualified to NFL Nationals, the Tournament of Champions, and received sizeable college debate scholarships – in several cases, far above their cost of attending MSDI.

Our institute tournaments use a unique, day long preparation approach that allows for deep strategic planning. Although different from the tempo of normal season tournaments, past camp attendees have enjoyed this format because it teaches them everything they should do before a tournament to prepare for known opponents.

Our staff/student ratio is 8/1 or better, and many of the staff are current college coaches that have coached at the top levels of college debate. It’s rare to get to work with such a staff at a camp price comparable to MSDI, and rarer still to have such staff as lab leaders.

Our camp size is typically around 50 – plenty for a good tournament, but not so many that you get lost in the crowd.

The Skills Intensive (Session 1 or 2) – An UTNIF favorite, this program focuses on improving your debate skills by putting you straight into practice rounds as soon as you arrive. *New* The Sophomore Select* (Session 1 only) – We are very excited to offer this new program for rising sophomores. The Sophomore Select will be led by Brian McBride of the University of Southern California and Nick Fiori of Damien. Students will work as a tight knit lab with McBride and Fiori to master foundational skills. Skill and tactical work will be the emphasis, but the lab also aims to ignite student interest in topic research argument construction. Two of the best coaches from the high school and college debating world, McBride and Fiori will ensure students come away transformed into much, much, better debaters. Outside lectures by other UTNIF staff on select topics will be offered. Limited enrollment, acceptance by application only. The SDI retains staff members and lab placement for all skill levels, including a pre-novice lab for individuals with no debate experience, all the way through to those seeking to polish varsity skills.

Whitman National Debate Institute

Policy Schedule
July 17-Aug 5, 2011 (3 week) July 17-29, 2011 (2 week)

LD Schedule
July 17-Aug 5, 2011 (3 week) July 17-29, 2011 (2 week)

Public Forum Schedule
July 29-Aug 5, 2011 (1 week)

4 to 1 staff to student ratio and the vast majority of your time will be spent in small 8 person labs with two staff members, not in a lecture room with 100 people; not in a lab with 12 to 16 people. You engage in 8 drills and 10 policy or 14 LD debates with clear feedback and re-dos in just the first two weeks. Public forum debaters engage in 8 debates during their first week plus many drills. These begin on the second day of camp, so you improve day after day-not just at the very end when it is too late. You won’t go home with a few paltry pieces of evidence and you won’t spend endless hours as a research slave. Our unique staff jump-started research program gives you the tools to produce high quality evidence in large volumes. In 2009, we produced over 2,600 policy, 650 LD pages (on all ten NFL LD topics), and over 100 pages on Public Forum topics. Each debater receives prints of files they choose plus electronic versions of all of the files.

Women’s Debate Institute

August 7-10, 2011

The Women’s Debate Institute is a robust community dedicated to the education of young women. Each summer we host a national debate camp for high school girls of all abilities. Our four day camp increases the number of girls involved in debate, creates an environment that fosters community, and encourages young women to attend college.

At the Women’s Debate Institute, high school girls have the opportunity to learn policy and Lincoln Douglas debate skills from some of the top female debaters in the country. Working one-on-one with former NDT and CEDA winners gives girls the competitive edge they need to be successful debaters. Yet being a great debater is only a part of the equation. The Women’s Debate Institute also teaches students what it means to be a woman in debate and exposes girls to the rich community of women in this activity. Finally, our “College Seminar” gives each student the opportunity to learn how to make higher education a reality, regardless of their current situation.

Two of the best coaches from the high school and college debating world, McBride and Fiori will ensure students come away transformed into much, much, better debaters. Outside lectures by other UTNIF staff on select topics will be offered. Limited enrollment, acceptance by application only. 3-week program: July 10-29
4-week program: July 10 – August 5

If you are interested in improving your debate skills, the Spartan Debate Institutes offer programs ranging from two to five weeks in length. The SDI retains staff members and lab placement for all skill levels, including a pre-novice lab for individuals with no debate experience, all the way through to those seeking to polish varsity skills.
