Summer Debate Camp Guide 2015: Institutes Offering Low-Cost Tuition and Scholarships

Debate Camp Guide for Summer 2016.***

Debate camp is a fantastic opportunity for all debaters, regardless of skill level, argumentative style, or event. No matter how you debate, there is a camp out there for you. Camps give you the chance to  learn from a different coaching staff, begin work on the new topic(s), and have a ton of fun.

Investing the time over the summer to grow as a debater can pay off enormously in the next season, and we believe that opportunity should be available to everybody, regardless of financial means. That’s why we have prepared this list of summer debate institutes which offer low-cost tuition (in comparison to the average), scholarship opportunities, or both! With camps for every event at nearly every price point, you’re sure to find something that works for you.

Below, you will find our master list, organized alphabetically by camp name. It includes location, debate events offered, dates, cost, and scholarship availability. For further information, or to apply, click on the camp name to be taken directly to its website.

Camp tips to keep in mind:

  • Make sure you do you research before committing to a camp. Ideally, you want to go somewhere that focuses on the type of arguments you like to make (traditional or non-traditional? Ks or straight-up? Etc.) and offers the kind of instruction you need most (is it focused on researching and cutting cards, or on skills work, or practice debates? Etc.)
  • Some camps offer discounts if multiple members of your team attends. If you and a partner or a friend are hoping to attend camp together, it doesn’t hurt to ask.
  • Most camps offer both a residential and commuter pricing option. If there is a camp close to your home, you can save money by opting out of purchasing a room and meal plan.
  • Camp directors are nice people and are usually happy to accommodate your needs. Have to miss a day, arrive late, or leave early? Just ask. It’s usually not a problem.

If you would like to print out this list and distribute it, here is a printer-friendly PDF version.

15 Responses to Summer Debate Camp Guide 2015: Institutes Offering Low-Cost Tuition and Scholarships

  1. Valerie Freitas says:

Hello, My 15 year old son is interested in getting into debate. He has not had any previous experience. I had no idea there were so many options in debates and wondering if there is a source that explains all of these options. I’d like to encourage him, so I would want something age appropriate but is not going to overwhelm him with too much competitiveness or expectation when he is just a new comer. I’d like him to enjoy his experience and be encouraged to continue in the fall. Could you recommend something near us? We live in Dublin, CA in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area. We are willing to drive, but we would prefer something closer if possible. Many camps are too expensive for us. Thank you,Valerie

    • Rachel Stevens says:

Hi Valerie- Great question! I am thrilled to hear your son is getting involved in debate, and is interested in attending camp. As for your questions, rest assured that most summer debate institutes have “labs” (classes) for all levels of skills and experience. The beginners’ labs will tend to focus on basic skills and building confidence. They will usually have some practice rounds, but these are just for experience and shouldn’t feel high-pressure. There are several camps I can recommend in your area! Right there in the Bay Area, there is the Young Genius Academy, which offers instruction for total beginners, VERY flexible scheduling, and relatively low-cost tuition. The “Barking Bulldogs” camp at Fresno State University would also be a great pick for your son, if you don’t mind driving to Fresno. It is one of the lowest-cost camps around, has novice (beginner) labs, and offers need-based financial aid, too. Don’t hesitate to reach out to the camp director to discuss your situation! One more good option for your son would be the Dr. Robert Gass Summer Institute, which has very low tuition, but you would have to make rooming arrangements near Cal State Fullerton. The camp can assist you with that, but you’d need to act fact– housing requests need to be submitted by June 1. I hope that helps! If you have any questions at all, feel free to reply to this comment, or contact me directly at rachel [dot] stevens [at] ncpa [dot] org.

    Hi Rachel,
My daughter is 12 years old and interested in getting into speech and debate. We live in Pennsylvania, and I was wondering if you have any information about speech and debate in Pennsylvania?
    Thanks,
    JC Meng

    • Rachel Stevens says:

Hi JC, what part of Pennsylvania are you located in? Typically, debate tournaments are facilitated through schools, but students also often attend camps during the summer. With a little more information, I think I could be much more helpful. Feel free to also email me directly: rachel [dot] stevens [at] ncpa.org. Thanks for using Debate Central!

    Hi Rachel,

My daughter is going into high school next year and would love to attend debate camp. We live near Dallas, TX. I don’t understand all the abbreviations for each camp….which one is appropriate for someone that has done very informal debating up until now? Also, is middle school for kids that are in middle school or would my daughter also be in that category since she’s just finishing middle school?

    • Shannon says:

      Hey Barbara,
My name is Shannon, and I also live in the Dallas Area. Depending on what style of Debate your daughter would like to do I would suggest either the Mean Green workshop (it’s in Denton, which isn’t far from Dallas) or if you don’t mind a drive the Texas Speech and Debate Camp in Marshall TX. (It’s at the East Texas Baptist University Campus).

My two sons are in 9th grade and competing in debate in the San Diego area. We are looking for a full scholarship based on need and merit. They have placed 2nd and quarter finals in several Los Angeles Invitationals and qualified as one of six regional teams to compete at the State of California debate tournament. They compete in Open Policy, but I don’t see many camps for this, where do you suggest we look?

  9. Malar says:

    Hello,

My son is currently a sophomore and will be a junior in 2016-2017 school year. He has been doing International Extemp since Freshman year and has had a pretty good season this past year. He was a finalist at the National qualifies and a semi-finalist at Ohio State NFL. He would like to participate in an advanced summer Extemp camp so he can hone his skills to qualify for the Nationals and do well there.

Can you please suggest advanced Extemp summer camp options for this summer(2016 Summer)?

    Thanks much!!

I am looking at a debate team for my 11 year old son a rising 6th grader in and around the DFW metroplex. Can he join the team and if not, can you please direct me to a good team where they accept kids his age.
    Thank you!
